The Tar Heels took game one 30-17, as the Pack hit a match-low -.022. State led very early, but UNC tied the score at 8-8 on a Sue Haydel kill before taking the lead for good on the very next point due to a Zirpolo ball handling error.
The Wolfpack put up a match-high 12 kills in the second frame, forcing extra play in the most thrilling game of the evening. Trailing 9-12 due to a red-hot NC State start, UNC grabbed four-straight points to forge ahead, but State immediately tied things up. The lead see-sawed between teams until North Carolina found itself ahead at 29-27. The red and white didn’t fold however, as a Smith/Wallace combo block, followed by a Wallace kill, knotted the score at 29-all. But the Tar Heels came out on top, 31-29, when a Smith service error and a Brooks kill followed the Wolfpack rally.
UNC reeled off the first seven points of the third and final game, easing its way to a 30-15 decision. The Tar Heels cruised on a match-high .448 hitting clip.
