Georgia Tech Tops Volleyball, 3-0

ATLANTA, Ga. NC State fell to Georgia Tech in three games on Friday, Oct. 26, in Atlanta, Ga. The loss sends the Pack to 3-19 (0-12 ACC) on the year, while the Yellow Jackets improve to 14-8 (8-4 ACC).
Ashley Wallace was near-flawless yet again, grabbing seven kills in 12 attempts without a single attack error. Wallace hasn't had an attack error in the last two matches, and has just two in her last 49 swings. Lauren Zaniboni led State with eight kills as Georgia Tech held all Wolfpackers to single-digit kill counts. Alex Smith totaled 28 assists, and Chrissy Zirpolo recorded 11 digs. Zaniboni also had a team-high seven total blocks, and three players recorded service aces.
Talisa Kellogg (14) and Chrissy DeMichelis (13) led GT in the kill department. Allie Niekamp (23) and Mary Ashley Tippins (14) combined for 37 assists, and Michelle Kandell scored 14 digs. The Yellow Jackets flourished when serving, tallying 12 service aces.
In all, GT out-hit the Pack, .313 to .131.
NC State (.119) and Georgia Tech (.216) both posted match-low hitting percentages in the opening frame, which the Yellow Jackets collected, 30-27. The Ramblin’ Wreck led 10-5 early on, but State battled back to close in at 13-10. GT succeeded at keeping the Pack at arm’s length until nearly the very last moment. Facing match point, State scored three-straight to pull to within two points of the lead before an Ulrike Stegeman kill ended play.
The Pack hit a match-high (.148) in the second stanza, but GT did the very same thing with a .414. The Yellow Jackets collected 11 of the first 16 scores, and quickly moved its advantage to 25-9 before a Kandell service error ended an eight-point Georgia Tech run. State went on to collect eight more points after that, but it wasn’t enough as the Yellow Jackets pulled away, 30-18.
The Wolfpack picked up the first three points of the third and final game, but GT followed with three-straight of its own to tie things up. The Ramblin’ Wreck moved ahead for good at 5-4 on a Wallace service error, before closing out play at 30-19 on a kill from Kellogg.
NC State will square off with Clemson tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 27. at 6 p.m.
