Prewitt drove in the go-ahead runs with a two-run double in the fifth inning and added a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning of the seven-inning game. Sogard allowed just two runners in his three innings of work and was not seriously threatened in picking up the win. Sam Brown pitched the seventh inning for the save.
Team Pack scored the game’s first run in the bottom of the first. Dallas Poulk led off against Eric Surkamp and singled to left. First baseman Pat Ferguson mishandled a pickoff throw for an error that moved Poulk to second, and Poulk went to third on Nick Stanley’s grounder to first. Marcus Jones hit a one-out single to right to drive in the run.
Team Wolf came back and took the lead with a two-run third inning at the expense of Team Pack starter Eryk McConnell. Wade Moore led off with a single to left, the first of his two hits, and stole second. With one down, Joe Florio singled to shallow center field, advancing Moore to third base. Moore scored on Sean Morrison’s groundout to shortstop, and Mike Gatlin drove in Florio with a long triple over the head of right fielder Ryan Pond.
Team Pack answered with two in the bottom of the third, one of them unearned. Stanley led off and reached on a throwing error by second baseman Devon Cartwright. Jones erased Cartwright on a force play and Jeremy Synan walked to put runners on first and second. Matt Payne doubled to drive in Jones, and Ferguson lofted a sacrifice fly to left to score Synan with the go-ahead run, giving Team Pack a 3-2 lead.
Team Wolf tied the scored at 3-3 in the top of the fourth, the first run allowed in four appearances in the series by Drew Taylor, who took the loss after allowing three runs on five hits in three innings. Ramon Rubio drew a one-out walk and went to second on Moore’s single to center. With two down, Florio singled to left to drive in Rubio with the tying run.
Gatlin led off the top of the fifth for Team Wolf and worked Taylor for a walk. Cartwright singled sharply off of Taylor’s glove to put runners on first and second, and Taylor fielded Bill Edwards’ sacrifice bunt and went to third to retire the lead runner. Bad decision. Gatlin was at the bag before the ball left Taylor’s hands, loading the bases with none out. Taylor almost got out of the jam, retiring Rubio on a fly ball to shallow center field and striking out Moore, but Prewitt doubled down the left-field line to drive in both baserunners and give Team Wolf a 5-3 lead.
Team Wolf added an insurance run in the top of the seventh off reliever Travis High. Edwards led off and doubled off the wall in left field. Rubio sacrificed Edwards to third, and Moore walked and stole second. Edwards scored to make it 6-3 on Prewitt’s sacrifice fly to center field.
Synan smoked a one-out homer to right in the bottom of the seventh for the final run of the game.
NC State’s intrasquad Fall World Series will conclude with three games next weekend, October 26-28. Game times are TBA.
