RALEIGH, N.C. NC State fell to Florida State in three games on Saturday, Oct. 20, at Reynolds Coliseum on the NC State campus in Raleigh, N.C. With the loss, the Pack falls to 3-18 (0-11 ACC), while the Seminoles climb to 8-11 (5-6 ACC).
Ashley Wallace was sensational, grabbing 10 kills in 19 attempts without recording a single error. Her .526 hitting clip marked a season-high with 10 or more attempts. Lauren Zaniboni posted a team-best 11 kills, and Chrissy Zirpolo added 10 kills and 13 digs. Allison Davis’ 19 assists was tops on the team.
Mira Djuric compiled 18 kills and four service aces for FSU, with Brianna Barry (12 kills) and Lauren Richardson (10 kills) adding to the offensive assault. Nikki Baker lifted 44 assists and Summer Weissing contributed 20 digs.
In all, the Noles out-hit the Pack .351 to .179.
FSU got ahead early in game one, and used a quick eight-point run to move the score to 13-3. The Pack eventually cut the lead to eight points, but the hole was to deep to get out of as the Seminoles held on, 30-18, hitting a match-high .457.
State had its best game statistically in the second stanza, hitting .220 and nailing 14 kills. Tied at 13-all, Florida State pulled ahead for good on a Djuric kill. An Andi Bentley service ace chipped away at the Seminoles lead and put the Pack within three points of tying things up at 25-22, but FSU responded by ripping off five-straight to collect a 30-22 decision.
The Wolfpack kept things close in the third and final frame, but FSU used several scoring runs to stay one step ahead after taking the lead permanently at 5-4 on a Djuric service ace. The Pack cut the lead to one on several occasions, and a Zirpolo kill at 29-23 extended play. Still facing match point, a Richardson attack error kept State alive, but a Davis service error followed, and the door closed on any potential comeback, 30-25.
NC State will now hit the road for its next three bouts. The Pack will take on Georgia Tech on Friday, Oct. 26 at 7 p.m., before heading to Clemson for a 6 p.m. showdown on Saturday, Oct. 27. The following Tuesday, Oct. 30, the red and white will journey over to rival North Carolina for a 7 p.m. contest.
