Wolfpack Softball Releases 2008 Schedule
10/2/2007 12:00:00 AM | Softball
RALEIGH, N.C. NC State softball head coach Lisa Navas announced the team’s 2008 schedule on Tuesday, Oct. 2. The Pack will begin its mission for a third-straight NCAA Tournament bid on Feb. 8, taking on Kansas at the UCF Softball Tournament in Orlando, Fla. The squad will also compete at four other challenging tournaments; the FAU “Strike-Out” Cancer Tournament in Boca Raton, Fla., the College of Charleston Tournament in Charleston, S.C., the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Columbus, Ga., and the USF Under Armour Invitational in Clearwater, Fla.
“We’re looking forward to a very competitive season,” said Navas. “This is a rebuilding year for us after losing players in key positions, but we’re eager to get started.
“We’re very excited to be getting into the Leadoff Classic, which is a testament to what we have accomplished during our past two seasons,” said Navas. “It’s an elite tournament inviting only top teams from each region, and we’re proud to be a part of it.”

Feb. 27 is certain to be one of the most anticipated days in the history of the Wolfpack softball program. At 3 p.m., State will begin its first of two games against UNC Greensboro, marking the inaugural game at the Curtis & Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium on the NC State campus.
Newly acquired UNC Greensboro pitching coach and former Wolfpack hurler Shaina Ervin will be making her return trip to Raleigh as a member of the Spartans staff. Former red and white catcher Miranda Ervin, Shaina’s twin sister, remains at State as a graduate assistant.
“We’re excited to be playing on campus and getting on our own field,” said Navas. “It adds a little more than Shaina is the pitching coach on the other side, but we still have Miranda. UNC Greensboro has always had a good program and they will be a good test for us.”
Another date of note falls on March 8, when the Pack will take on Team USA during its trip to Clearwater.
“This is a great opportunity for our student-athletes to be on the same field as players that serve as their role models,” said Navas. “We are looking forward to going toe-to-toe with the best.”
The red and white will begin ACC play on March 15, hosting Boston College for the first two games of a three game series. In fact, four of the Pack’s first five league series will be played in Raleigh, as the team also welcomes Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech and Maryland. NC State will hit the road for series at Virginia, North Carolina and Florida State.
Outside of the ACC, the Pack will host UNC Greensboro, Winthrop and Coastal Carolina. State will travel to Elon, Georgia State, Radford and Charlotte for further non-conference play.
The ACC Championships will be held in College Park, Md., May 8-11.
Last season State finished second in the ACC regular season standings, earning its second-consecutive NCAA Tournament bid. With a 42-21 (15-6 ACC) record, the Pack earned a No. 1 seed at the Columbia, S.C., NCAA Tournament Regional, taking the overall No. 15 national seed, the highest mark in program history. Abbie Sims became the first Wolfpack student-athlete to earn league player of the year honors, while Jen Chamberlin, Shanna Smith and Heather Gelbard joined her with all-conference honors.
