RALEIGH, N.C. NC State took the first game of its match against Miami on Friday, Oct. 19, at Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh, N.C., but it wasn’t enough. The Hurricanes battled back to win three-straight and defeat the Wolfpack, 3-1. The loss moves the Pack to 3-17 (0-10 ACC), while UM improves to 9-10 (3-7 ACC).
Chrissy Zipolo’s season-best 18 kills led the Pack offense, with Lauren Zaniboni also supplying 12 strikes. Alex Smith lifted 36 assists, and Ashley Wallace had eight total blocks. Zirpolo (13), Lindsay Benac (10), Nikki Sweet (10) and Zaniboni (10) all recorded double-digit dig totals.
Ciara Michel (16) led the UM kill department, while Bridget Bomhack (13), Genny Mayhew (12), and Maria Anderson (11) all made significant contributions. Katie Gallagher recorded 52 assists and Cassie Loessberg notched 27 digs.
The Pack looked sensational in taking game one, 17-30, hitting for a match-high .367 clip. State started off play with a 0-3 run, but Miami quickly countered with a six-point dance of its own. Leading 10-11, the Wolfpack grabbed nine of 10 points, and then limited the Hurricanes to just six more scores the rest of the way.
The Canes came back to grab the first six points of the second stanza, putting State into a deep deficit immediately. But the Pack fought back hard, eventually knotting the score at 26-all before taking a brief 26-27 lead. UM countered by tying things back up at 28-28, and State was held scoreless the rest of the way as Miami won, 30-28.
The red and white had its poorest statistical showing of the night in the third frame, hitting just .083 in a 30-26 defeat. The Pack lead 7-11 before the Hurricanes reeled off eight-straight to take a 15-11 advantage. A Michel kill gave UM the lead for good at 23-22, and the Canes never looked back.
Miami hit a match-high .294 during the fourth and final game, downing State 30-25. A Bomhack kill put UM up for the rest of play at 11-10, despite the fact that the Wolfpack came to within one point of the lead on several occasions.
State will return to the courts against the Florida State Seminoles tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 20, at 6 p.m. Play will be held at Reynolds Coliseum on the NC State campus.
