The red paint on the seats was barely dry, one of the many off-season renovations to historic Reynolds Coliseum. It was a big change for fans who were used to seeing dark green chair-back seats on the balcony of the arena from the day it opened in December, 1949, under the direction of head coach Everett Case.
There was another big change the team benches and official scorer's table were switched from the west side of the coliseum to the east side. The rubberized Tartan surface of the court was also resurfaced and repainted and brighter lights were installed in the gracefully aging building.
So it's no wonder that the upper level seats were the setting for the cover of the 1983 media guide, as head coach Jim Valvano promoted the subtle changes he was bringing to the program in his third year at the helm.
