Virginia Tech Comeback Sinks Volleyball, 3-1

BLACKSBURG, Va. NC State took the first game of its contest in Blacksburg, Va., at Virginia Tech on Saturday, Oct. 13, but ultimately fell, 3-1. The loss sends the Pack to 3-16 (0-9 ACC), while the Hokies climb 11-9 (5-5).
Lauren Zaniboni posted a double-double with 16 kills and 10 digs, and Chrissy Zirpolo also scored 16 kills while adding two service aces. Lindsay Benac had a team-high 14 digs, while Allison Davis lifted 29 assists. Janay Yancey tallied three total blocks, and the team posted eight total blocks overall.
Virginia Tech’s offensive attack was fronted by Jen Albrecht (17 kills) and Sarah Munoz (14 kills). Michelle Lang pushed up 47 assists, and Felicia Willoughby scored eight total blocks. Four Hokie players, Amanda Cloyd (28), Taylor Parrish (23), Munoz (12) and Jill Gergen (10), posted double-digit dig totals.
In all, VT out-hit the Pack .230 to .087.
State took game one, 27-30, as the Hokies hit a match-low .100. The Pack led 9-14, but VT rallied back to even the score at 14-all. The lead teeter-tottered back and forth between the two squads until a three-point run put the Wolfpack up for good at 23-26.
VT came back with a vengeance in the second frame, hitting at a match-high .361 clip en route to a 30-16 decision. The Pack began play with an 0-2 lead, but the Hokies quickly jumped to a 10-5 advantage, eventually leading by as many as 14.
The Wolfpack had its best game statistically in the third stanza, scoring 16 kills and hitting for a match-high .161. Trailing 22-13, State rallied back to pull to within two at 28-26. A Keri DeMar attack error moved the Hokies to match point, but a DeMar kill followed and the Pack stayed alive. DeMar and Ashley Wallace then combined for a block, shrinking VT’s lead to 29-28, but a block by Munoz and Willoughby ended State’s spirited run at 30-28.
The Wolfpack’s offense struggled in the fourth and final contest, hitting -.022. It didn’t take long for the Hokies to pile on a 20-10 lead, and State only managed seven more points the rest of the way, as VT closed things out 30-17.
NC State will return home next week for matches against Miami and Florida State at Reynolds Coliseum. The Pack will take on the Hurricanes on Friday, Oct. 19 at 6 p.m., before hosting the Seminoles on Saturday, Oct. 20 at 6 p.m.
