Virginia Sweeps Wolfpack Volleyball, 3-0

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. NC State fell to 3-15 (0-8 ACC) on the season with a 3-0 loss at Virginia on Friday, Oct. 12, in Charlottesville, Va. The Pack dropped the first game 30-19, before falling 30-15 in the second and 30-27 in the third. The Cavaliers improved to 11-7 (6-3 ACC) with the win.
Lauren Zaniboni led State’s offense with 11 kills, while Ashley Wallace and Keri DeMar each added seven. Nikki Sweet landed three service aces, and Alex Smith lifted 23 assists. Chrissy Zirpolo collected 12 digs, while Wallace, Zirpolo, and Jana Angel each grabbed four total blocks. As a team, State hit .070.
Shannon Davis nailed 14 kills for UVa, while Kelly Irvin put up 40 assists. Melissa Caldwell scored 14 digs, and Sarah Kirkwood offered up six service aces. Kendahl Voelker recorded four blocks. The Cavaliers hit .276 overall.
Virginia opened the night with an 11-3 run in game one, putting State in a hole that it couldn’t escape before falling 30-19. The Pack’s offense sputtered in the second stanza, recording just six kills total, before play ended at 30-15.
The red and white put up its best effort statistically in the third and final frame, placing 15 kills and hitting .143 as a team. UVa led by 12 late at 22-10, but the Pack grabbed 16 of the next 22 points, shrinking the Cavaliers advantage to two at 28-26. A Davis kill sent UVa to match point at 29-26, but a Zaniboni kill kept the Pack alive. Another Davis kill, however, ended the evening at 30-27.
NC State will return to the court tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 13, against the Virginia Tech Hokies in Blacksburg, Va. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
