NC State swimming and diving will host its annual Red & White Meet Friday, Oct. 12, at the Casey Natatorium on the NC State campus at 5 pm. The annual event is a chance for the entire roster to compete in a meet setting to showcase the individual talents of the team. The meet is open to the public and will feature both the men's and women's swimming and diving team to compete in a preview of the upcoming season.
2007-08 Men’s Swimming Season Outlook
NC State swimming and diving is entering a time of great expectations for a talented and constantly maturing group of swimmers and divers. Head coach Brooks Teal is confident that the 26 men’s student-athletes on the roster will come out of the gates this season with a determination to top last season’s effort.
“We lost one of the most versatile swimmers we’ve ever had in Steve Cowling,” Teal said of the ACC champion and team MVP who graduated in 2007. “But we have a talented core of swimmers and strong leadership from our seniors. We have a team that’s confident and has shown a tremendous work ethic in preparing for this season. No one was satisfied with our eighth-place finish last season and we’re determined to improve on that.”
With balance and talent spread out eligibilty wise - three seniors, eight juniors, eight sophomores and seven freshman comprise the team - Teal and his men’s squad are prepared to make an impact in the water.
SPRINT FREESTYLE
NC State returns its top swimmers from last season in the 50 and 100 free, with senior Dan Glauber (100 free) and sophomore Taylor Goodwin (50 free) in the mix. Sophomore Travis Martinez, second in the 50 free a year ago, will also be a factor in the sprint freestyle events and relays. Senior co-captain Brian Crowder will add quality depth, as will sophomores Andrew Keenan, Derek Ernst and freshman Allen Lee, a state finalist.
MID-DISTANCE FREESTYLE
The middle-distance events will be anchored by sophomore Mason McGee, who held the fastest 200- and 500-freestyle marks on the team a year ago. His 200-free time last season made him the fifth fastest performer in school history, while his 500-free mark was seventh. Andrew Lester, a junior standout who excels in the distance events, was second in the 500 in 2006-07 and could be counted on in any event from the 200 to the mile. Junior Jon Vorpagel and sophomores Travis Martinez and Andrew Keenan will provide quality depth.
DISTANCE FREESTYLE
Andrew Lester is one of the top distance swimmers in school history, and his 500-free time ranks him as the eighth fastest in school history. Lester was the top swimmer on the team in the 1000 and 1650 freestyle in 2006-07. Mason McGee will also compete in the 500 free, and they will be backed up sophomore Nick Brittis and junior Cole Yarborough.
BUTTERFLY
In the 100 butterfly, Taylor Goodwin and freshman Mike Seiferth will lead the way with Dan Glauber and Derek Ernst contributing as well. In the 200 fly, Seiferth will be joined by fellow freshman Tyler Mills and Mason McGee.
BACKSTROKE
Stephen Mellor has already made his mark as one of the top swimmers in school history after only one year of competition. The junior is a team captain and already holds a pair of school records, including the top 200 backstroke mark. He also ranks as the sixth fastest performer ever in the 100 back. Behind Mellor is a talented group in its own right. Sophomore Kevin Woodhull-Smith has two top-10 school marks and will continue to improve in the water. Freshmen Ben Mechak and Nick Schauer will provide depth in this event and on the relays.
BREASTSTROKE
The breaststroke events are anchored by a talented mix of newcomers and a seasoned veteran. Senior Jack Roney, a conference finalist last season, is the sixth fastest performer all-time in the 200 and 10th in the 100. Junior Sam Fuller and sophomore Danny Voss will compete in the breaststroke events as well. A pair of senior national qualifiers will add quality as freshmen Dan Forsythe and Greg Baskwell join the team.
INDIVIDUAL MEDLEY
The individual medley events are among the deepest on the 2007-08 team, with four different swimmers holding a top-10 mark in the 200 and 400 IMs. Stephen Mellor holds the school record in the 400 IM and is second all-time in the 200 IM. Taylor Goodwin is the sixth fastest performer in school history in the 200 IM and will join Kevin Woodhull-Smith, the 10th-fastest performer in school history, and Sam Fuller in the 200 IM. In the 400 IM event, Mellor and Woodhull-Smith will be joined by Andrew Lester, the eighth fastest performer all-time, by Danny Voss.
DIVING
The divers are a talented group, led by junior All-ACC performer Austin Hampton, the school-record holder in the three-meter diving events in both six- and 11-dive formats. Fellow juniors Alex Dambly and Scott Blackwelder round out the male divers.
