Inside the Chalk Box: Looking Towards the Season

NC State assistant coach / recruiting coordinator Todd Henry checks in periodically via GoPack.com’s “Inside the Chalk Box”; offering an exclusive behind-the-scenes view of Wolfpack Gymnastics!
RALEIGH, N.C. - A new season has begun for the Wolfpack! We just finished our second week of official practice and all of the ladies are doing well and adjusting back to college life. The 2008 season looks to be very exciting. On paper we are better than last year, a season in which we won our conference and finished the season with a No. 24 national ranking. I would say that this year’s squad has the ability to achieve even greater things.
As with any team, our freshman could potentially hold the key to our success this year. Kirsten Such will be an all-around gymnast for us. She is a great competitor and has lots of fun while in front of a crowd. Brittany Vontz will be back up to full speed in the coming months after undergoing off-season surgery. She will be a factor on bars for us this year and potentially also on the beam in time. Megan Rowell has been a great surprise for us so far. She is a walk-on and has really worked hard and could compete for the Pack on floor, beam and vault. Brittney Hardiman will be counted on for the all-around. She is a very powerful gymnast in all the events and will compliment some of the upper classmen nicely.
NC State has a solid core of experienced gymnasts returning. Kelsey Lee, Leigha Hancock and Heather Zolton are our seniors, while Ashley Shepard, Taylor Seaman and Lauren Deuser make up the centerpiece of our sophomore and junior classes.
This is a special time for me personally as well. I was hired at State the same year that this senior class came onto campus. I have had a wonderful time watching them grow as people, both in and out of the gym! They are great examples of what it means to be a student-athlete.
Until next time ... Coach Todd
