Raleigh, N.C. – The NC State gymnastics team gave its fans something to cheer about in the opening home meet of the season last weekend, as the Pack scored an impressive 194.625. Senior Crisann Calvo took time to reflect on last weekends meet, and talk about the improvement she has already seen on this year’s team. NC State will hit the road this weekend for two meets, as the Pack travels to Rutgers on Friday and Penn State on Saturday.
Calvo: As Amanda Jones said last week, "Our goal this weekend is to improve upon last meets routines, and get one step closer to a successful season". That is just what we did this past weekend taking a commanding second place finish behind only Georgia. It was possibly one of the biggest highlights in my four years, as well as the rest of the seniors. Hopefully it is only a glimpse of what is to come for the underclassmen the next few years.
We also managed to post a new school record with the highest home opener in school history! Our performance last Sunday afternoon helped boost both the confidence in ourselves and in each other as a team.
We had the greatest improvement on vault and floor, and maintained a strong consistency on both bars and beam. The freshmen once again showed what they're made of continuing their success from last weekend, with Olga Bodrikova jumping in the mix on floor as well. Veterans Amanda Jones, Katie Ozburn, Leigha Hancock, and Kelsey Lee still let their presence be known with consistent performances in their respective events. Confidence and experience definitely seem to be the most noticeable change in this year’s team from last years, and may be just what we need to have a successful rest of the season.
We are determined to prove what NC State is capable of, that we have the drive, fortitude, and plain old talent that the top teams in the country have as well. Heading into this weekend we hope to set ourselves up with two more strong away scores and continue in our little improvements as we head to Rutgers and Penn State. I'm sure we will slowly creep up in the standings each week so keep on the lookout!
