No. 32 Women's Tennis Tops Gardner Webb, 6-1

The No. 32 Wolfpack women's tennis team easily defeated the Gardner-Webb bulldogs with a 6-1 triumph at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center Sunday morning. NC State quickly took the doubles point to get the match rolling and swept through the top-four singles spots. Despite Daria Petrovic (No. 43 ITA ranking) and junior Julia Roach sitting out in the singles lineup, the Wolfpack used a pair of sophomores and three newcomers to jump out to the early lead.
Berkley Brock, who led the team in the fall in wins, carried her hot hand into this match, easily dispatching of Laura Kriett of Gardner-Webb at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-0, as the freshman was never really threatened. At No. 2 singles, sophomore Alejandra Guerra won in straight sets against Monica Walser, 6-1, 6-1. Guerra combined with Petrovic in doubles as they defeated Kriett and Amy Beavers, 8-1.
Niels Barringer continues to impress with her play in 2006-07, as the sophomore got the dual match season started with a 6-2, 6-1, win at No. 3 singles. She combined with Kristen Bleakley to take the No. 2 doubles match, 8-1, over Kasey Ellis and Walser. At No. 4, Catherine Grotz made her NC State debut with an impressive 6-0, 6-2, win while using her strong serve to push Jenny Gomez around the court early and often.
Another player making her NC State debut was Kate Green, as the English player defeated Beavers at No. 5 singles. After taking an easy first set, 6-1, Green was broken on her serve a few times, leading to a rally from Beavers to force a tiebreak. Green wasted no time in ending the match, winning the tiebreak at love. Allison Barry played at No. 6 singles against Carol Pancia. Pancia took the first set 6-2, but Allison Barry rallied to with a 6-4 win in the second set to force a third set tiebreak. Allison Barry held match point at 9-8 in the tiebreak, but Pancia rallied to win, 11-9 for the Bulldogs only point of the match.
Lauren Barry and Agustina Arechavaleta played at No. 3 doubles and easily eliminated Gomez and Pancia by a score of 8-0. NC State returns to the courts this afternoon to complete the doubleheader with a 4:30 pm match against UNC-Wilmington.
