RALEIGH, N.C. – Joel Ahern scored four points in the final seconds of the final bout of the evening to hand NC State’s Joe Caramanica a 5-1 defeat at 149 pounds and ensure Navy’s 23-16 victory over the Wolfpack on Saturday at Reynolds Coliseum.
The 22nd-ranked Midshipmen won six of the 10 matches, including five of six at one point, and built a 20-10 lead heading into the final two matches. The Wolfpack stayed alive when Darrion Caldwell pinned Brad Canterbury at 141, the next to last bout of the match, but Ahern’s decision was the backbreaker for the Pack. Navy improved to 8-4 in dual bouts with the win. NC State, which lost its second bout in as many nights, fell to 7-6.
“We wrestled well tonight,” NC State head coach Carter Jordan said. “We were disappointed with the way we competed last night (a 16-14 loss at North Carolina), but tonight we came out and really wrestled hard. That’s a really good, really tough Navy team. They line up a good team for dual matches, and we went after them hard.”
Kody Hamrah, ranked No. 19 nationally at 157 pounds in the latest NWCA poll, got the Wolfpack off to a fast start with a 5-3 decision over John Jared. Hamrah, 13-5 on the season, had takedowns in each of the first two periods and allowed Jared points only on three escapes. The decision extended Hamrah’s current winning streak to seven in a row, one shy of his career high.
Obie Simpson added to NC State’s team lead within 8-4 decision over Justin Jacobs at 165 pounds. Simpson broke open a 2-1 match with a big third period, recording a takedown, a near fall and a pair of escapes.
Simpson’s decision gave the Wolfpack a 6-0 lead in the team score. Navy’s Matt Stolpinski, ranked 10th nationally, cut the lead to 6-5 with a technical fall of Jalil Dozier, who was wrestling up one weight class because Randy Goodman was unable to due to a shoulder injury suffered on Friday at North Carolina. Stolpinski had two takedowns and two three-point near falls in the first period, then put the bout away with a takedown and two more near falls in the second period.
The Midshipmen took a 9-6 lead on Antonio Miranda’s 16-6 major decision over NC State’s Jeremy Colbert in the 184-pound match. Miranda scored two takedowns in the second period, then added two more takedowns and a near fall in the third to win going away.
The Wolfpack went right back in front at 10-9 on Ryan Goodman’s 10-2 major decision over Matt Parsons at 197. Goodman, ranked No. 12, took a 2-0 lead in the first period when Parsons was penalized twice for stalling. Goodman, who extended his winning streak to 11 matches and improved to 13-1, finally got his first takedown in the second, then added two more takedowns, plus a point for riding time in the third.
The see-saw continued in the heavyweight bout as Navy’s Ed Prendergast took a 3-1 decision in sudden victory over Jainor Palma in a battle of ranked big men. Each wrestler got an escape, Prendergast (No. 9) in the second period, Palma (No. 17) in the third, but Prendergast, ranked ninth, got the winning takedown 40 seconds into the one-minute sudden-victory period. The loss ended Palma’s winning streak at seven matches.
The win at heavyweight gave the Midshipmen a 12-10 lead in the team scoring, and Alex Usztics extended that to 17-10 with a technical fall over Taylor Cummings, 18-2 at 6:58. Usztics took a 7-0 lead in the first period with a takedown and two near falls, then made it 10-0 after two with a second-period reversal and a point when Cummings was penalized for stalling. Usztics added three more takedowns in the final period to get the technical fall just ahead of the buzzer.
No. 11 Joe Baker made it three wins in a row for Navy with a 6-3 decision over the Wolfpack’s Garrett Cummings at 133 to make the team score 20-10 in favor of the Midshipmen. Pagen got the match’s only two takedowns, one in each of the first two periods, plus an escape and a point for riding time.
Caldwell, the Wolfpack’s freshman 141 pound sensation, cut the lead to 20-16 with a pin of Brad Canterbury one minute into the second period. Canterbury chose to start the second period in the down position and Caldwell made him pay by taking Canterbury to his back with a cradle move. Caldwell improved to 9-3 on the season with his team-leading fifth pin.
Ahern and Caramanica wrestled to a near-standstill at 1-1 before Ahern took Caramanica down directly to his back with about 10 seconds remaining. Two points for a near fall made the final score 5-1 and gave Navy the 23-16 win.
NC State will return to action next Saturday with a 2 p.m. bout against Maryland.
