Despite seven individual second place finishes and three wins, the Wolfpack men couldn’t overcome the depth of South Carolina on Senior Day at the Casey Natatorium. Steve Cowling, the lone senior on the men’s squad, turned in a pair of top-3 individual swims and was the anchor leg of the 400 free relay that finished second. The men lost by a score of 148-95.
Cowling finished second in the 100 free with a 46.86 and was third in the 50 free with a 21.46.
Stephen Mellor not only sang the National Anthem before the meet, but he turned in another stellar performance in the pool. He won the 200 IM with a 1:51.24, edging the second place finisher by a mere hundreth of a second. His next event was the 200 backstroke and he won that event as well, posting a 1:48.16 with a four second cushion this time around over the second place swimmer. Mellor finished off his day with a third place showing in the 200 breaststroke.
Alexander Dambly won the 3-meter competition with a 337.13 and Austin Hampton finished second in both the 1-meter and 3-meter dives.
Freshman Mason McGee and sophomore Andrew Lester combined for three, second place finishes with Lester turning in a pair of them. Lester swam a 9:20.86 in the 1000 free for the top-time on the team. In the 500 free, Lester is second in the event with a 4:34.97.
McGee finished second in the 200 free with a 1:41.70 and third in the 200 fly with a 1:57.02.
Dan Glauber finished second in the 50 free with a 21.41 for the Pack.
The men return to the pool on January 23 when they host North Carolina in the final home meet of the season.
