The NC State women’s soccer team (3-0-1) will host the Summit Hospitality Invitational on Friday, September 8 and Sunday, September 10. The teams participating this weekend are American University, East Carolina University, and Georgia State University. The four games will take place at Method Road Soccer Stadium. American will take on ECU Friday at 2 p.m. followed by the match between the Wolfpack and Georgia State at 4:30 p.m. On Sunday, Georgia State will play ECU at 12 p.m. and the Pack will follow with its match against American at 2:30 p.m.
The red and white are entering the invitational after a 4-0 win over Elon on Sunday, September 3. Senior Carol Tognetti netted two of the goals, and sophomore Tami Krzeszewski and freshman Chantalle Dugas also posted goals. Senior goalkeeper Megan Connors secured her fourth shutout this season, and her career 13th. Connors currently leads the ACC in the goals against average and in shutouts per game. NC State is also the only team in the ACC to have not given up any goals so far this season.
American’s head coach Michael Brady enters his seventh season with the Eagles (3-0-0). With the win over George Mason last weekend improving the team’s record to 3-0, American is having its best start in five years. Christina Gonzalez scored both goals for the Eagles against George Mason, improving her to three this season. Goalkeeper Alison Doyle also made three saves en route to the shutout.
The East Carolina Pirates (3-1-0) and coach Rob Donnenwirth, in his eighth season, come to Raleigh with three straight shutouts in the last four games. The team’s most recent win came with a victory over Charlotte, 2-0, with goals being scored by Jami Dickerson and Blair Heffner in the second half of the match. Goalkeeper Amber Campbell received her third straight shutout with the win. ECU’s freshman class has been making an impact by posting five of the team’s eight goals this season.
Georgia State (2-1-1) also comes to the invitational on a two game shutout streak, after a win over Mercer, 2-0. Lauren Chavez and Kay Harbrueger scored goals for the Panthers in the match. Coach Domenic Martelli, in his seventh season, changed up the team’s goalkeeper situation after beginning the season 0-1-1. Charlotte Vargo has started in the net all four games, but in the past two matches, Megan Macdonald has come in after halftime as goalkeeper. The combination has helped lead to victories over Tennessee Tech and Mercer.
