Raleigh, N.C. – The NC State women’s soccer team (3-0-1) scored four goals against Elon (1-3) en route to a 4-0 victory, Sunday, September 3, at Method Road Soccer Stadium. Senior Carol Tognetti posted two of the goals, and sophomore Tami Krzeszewski and freshman Chantalle Dugas each had one. Senior goalkeeper Megan Connors recorded her 13th career shutout. This is the first time since 1992 that the program has started the season with four straight shutouts. With the win, the Wolfpack improved to 3-0-1, and the Phoenix dropped to 1-3.
“We had some really good opportunities,” said NC State head coach Laura Kerrigan, “and we created some quality chances. In the second half, we really plugged up some holes and put the game away.”
NC State’s offense controlled the game in the first half by posting 16 shots. Ten minutes into the game the first three shots were made by the red and white. In the 29th minute, junior Jessica O'Rourke attempted to score from 30 yards out, but the ball hit the post, leaving the game scoreless. Another scoring attempt for the Pack came during the 35th minute when freshman Katie Ruiz had a corner kick, but the end swinger cleared off the back line. After NC State had posted 13 shots, Tognetti netted the first goal of the game at 38:51. After a pass from O’Rourke, Krzeszewski crossed the ball in front of the goal and Tognetti knocked it in low for the first Wolfpack first half goal of the season. The NC State defense prevented Elon from posting any shots during the half.
In the second half, Elon came out looking to even things up, but the NC State offense continued to pressure. Krzeszewski posted her first goal of the season in the 49th minute after a cross from freshman Gia Cipollini. Four minutes later, Tognetti obtained her second goal of the game with a shot from 30 yards out. The Pack looked to score again at 60:20 with a shot from freshman Briana Cunningham, but the ball bounced off the left post. At the 83-minute mark, Dugas attained her first goal of the season on a header off the cross from Cunningham, and secured the final score, 4-0.
The Wolfpack will host the Summit Hospitality Invitational next weekend at Method Road. The team takes on Georgia State on Friday, September 8 at 4:30 p.m., and American on Sunday, September 10 at 2:30 p.m.
