Undefeated Opening Day at the Wolfpack Invitational
9/29/2006 12:00:00 AM | Women's Tennis
It was an undefeated Wolfpack tournament opener at the Residence Inn Wolfpack Invitational for all nine NCSU women’s tennis players. The day consisted of two doubles matches and one singles match, leaving a total of 19 victories to claim, and by the end of the day, 19 victories were claimed. Everyone on the team sent a message to their opponents – we love to play at home and we are here to compete.
Even the Student Wolfpack Club spent a few hours at the JW Isenhour Tennis Center to support the women’s tennis team. Sophomore Neils Barringer playing in flight A2 singles felt an extra ounce of fire in her. “I was tied 2-2 in my first set and needed to find that small edge to push me to the 3-2 lead and found it in the crowd. I heard the Student Wolfpackers chanting “Wolfpack” from the bleachers. Before I knew it, my opponent double faulted, I won that game, and I won the next 10 games after that.” Neils Barringer won that match 6-2, 6-0.
Driven and purposeful tennis continued to be seen all throughout the day. Senior Agustina Arechavaleta was down 5-1, 40-love in her singles match and fought back to win that set 7-5, and then closed the second set 6-1, wining 11 games in a row in her flight A4 singles. Sophomore Alejandra Guerra, playing in doubles flight A1, also made the crowds cheer when she was rushing the net to meet her doubles partner freshman Daria Petrovic to hit a winner down the line with a between-the-legs shot, also known as a “tweener.”
The women’s tennis team played well today. Look forward to some more tennis action Saturday and Sunday as the tournament continues.
