Gymnastics Begins Fall Practice

Raleigh, N.C. – With the 2007 season fast approaching, the NC State gymnastics team is in the regular routine of daily practices preparing for one of the toughest schedules in school history. Assistant coach Todd Henry took some time to share some of his early preseason thoughts.
Henry: Our gymnastics team is entering the second week of mandatory practice. Everyone looks great and spirits are extremely high. Our freshmen have exhibited hard work and determination. Olga Bondrikova is hampered by a chronic wrist problem, but appears to be moving in a positive direction. Nicole Neal, the team trainer feels strongly that Olga will be a player when January rolls around. The upper classmen are strong as usual. Leigha Hancock, Heather Zolton and Amanda Jones make up the core of the team and we will look to them during the year for guidance.
Our game plan for this year will be a little different than in the past. For our first couple of meets (Auburn and Georgia), the team will scale down the routines. The staff feels that this will enable us to be more consistent. We have tons of depth on each event with different degrees of difficulty, however we are trying to keep the big picture in mind. The season is very long and we want to be at our best for conference and the post season!
It will be interesting to see who makes the line-up. Every year coaches across the country have a feeling about who might compete on this event or that event but there are always a few surprises. This year will be no different. Mark, Karen and myself have explained to the team that we are only going to compete skills this year that are rock solid.
Until next time.........
