Blacksburg, Va. – The NC State volleyball team lost to Virginia Tech, 3-0, on Friday, Sept. 22, at Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg, Va. Chrissy Zirpolo fronted the Wolfpack effort with 11 kills, while Aiwane Iboaya added four total blocks and Allison Davis pushed up 26 assists. With the loss, NC State falls to 2-9 (0-2 ACC) on the season, while the red-hot Hokies jump to 9-3 (3-0 ACC).
“Chrissy really played well tonight,” said head coach Charita J. Stubbs. “Victoria Bryant made several good plays for us and offered a solid effort. I was very pleased with what she brought to the table.”
Virginia Tech took the first game, 30-17, with a match-high .455 hitting percentage. NC State was held to just eight kills and a .091 hitting percentage.
The Wolfpack held its own ground in the second game, nearly winning the contest. A Keshia Raibon kill gave the Pack the chance to serve for the win, but the score became knotted at 30 on the following service error. The Hokies took advantage of the mishap, scoring two-straight points to seal the win, 32-30.
The red and white, which has struggled with youth and errors during third games all season, fell victim to the same problems in the final stanza against Virginia Tech, putting up a negative hitting percentage to hand the Hokies the win, 30-18.
“In the end, it was our mistakes that did us in,” said Stubbs. “I’m really pleased with the overall effort and performance that the team showed tonight. They are getting better and improving with each match. We have to continue to work on taking care of our mental errors and lapses.”
NC State will wrap up its two-match ACC road trip tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 23, with a 5 p.m. match at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Va.
