Voting has begun in the fifth-annual CapitalOne Mascot Challenge, which pits 12 of the top mascots in college athletics against each other in a 14-week head-to-head competition.
For the first time in the history of the competition, NC State’s Mr. Wuf – as portrayed by Tanner Leggett – is in the competition. In the first week of voting, Mr. Wuf is going up against the
University of
Kentucky’s Wildcat.
Two other mascots from the ACC – Georgia Tech’s Buzz and
Maryland’s Testudo – are also in the competition.
You can go on-line to vote for Mr. Wuf. The rules allow one vote per person per day, so bookmark the page and give daily support to NC State’s award-winning mascot.

Cullen Jones earlier this week for a piece about NC State swim coach Brooks Teal. The world's top-ranked 50-meter freestyler had planned to take it easy this fall, do some school work and start gearing up for the 2007 international swim season come December. But it’s not easy being the new darling of an entire sport. Jones has found himself busier than ever, trying to keep up with interview requests, school work and various other interests.
“I am doing the whole pro athlete thing,” said Jones, who recently helped set the world record in the 400 freestyle relay. “After the Pan Pacs, a lot of people wanted to know my story. How did I get where I am now. My agent has been putting stuff out and my calendar is packed.
“My phone is constantly on my ear.”
But, to be honest, Jones doesn’t mind all the attention. And he hasn’t yet tired of being referred to as the Tiger Woods of swimming.
“One of the things that I want to do is that I want my story to be out there,” Jones said. “I want people to know how I got here. I try not to think of it as a burden or a pain-in-the-butt kind of stuff. The interviews are tedious, but I love it.”
By the way, Coach Teal attended the American Swim Coaches Association World Clinic last week in
The award went to the
University of
Texas’ Eddie Reese, a long-time friend of Teal’s. Earlier in the day, Reese was named the men’s coach of the 2008 US Olympic team, so the chance are he’ll be in close contact with Teal – and Jones – over the next couple of years.
