Raleigh, N.C. In the final game of the Summit Hospitality Invitational, the NC State women’s soccer team (5-0-1) netted two goals en route to a shutout against American University (4-1) on Sept. 10 at Method Road Soccer Stadium. Goals were scored by sophomore Lindsay Vera and junior Jessica O'Rourke. Senior goalkeeper Megan Connors made one save in her 14th career shutout, her fifth of the season. The win improves the Wolfpack to 5-0-1, and the Eagles fall to 4-1.
“In the first half, we played the best we have all year,” said NC State head coach Laura Kerrigan. “American was fast and played with a different style; they were more technical, attacked a lot and moved the ball. We possessed well though and took great shots.”
NC State did not waste time getting the lead in the match. Less than six minutes into the game, Vera took a pass from O’Rourke and posted a goal over keeper Alison Doyle’s hands from ten yards out. Five minutes later, senior Carol Tognetti came close to scoring another goal for the Pack, but the American defense cleared it off the backline. In the 29th minute, Katelynn Donovan attempted to put the Eagles on the board with a strong shot from the left, but Connors was there for the save. At the 30:48 mark, O’Rourke notched the insurance goal for the red and white, 25 yards out, off a pass from freshman Briana Cunningham. The goal was O’Rourke’s fourth in the past two games.
In the second half of the game, NC State continued to control the ball, posting five shots to American’s one. With less than five minutes left in the match, Cunningham pushed forward to take a shot, but the American defenders were there to prevent the goal. Doyle then made a save off a shot from O’Rourke that was high in the box. The Pack’s final chance to score again came with 1:47 left in the game. Freshman Katie Ruiz posted a shot to the bottom right, but Doyle was there for the save again, leaving the final score 2-0.
