Men's Soccer to Play in Duke/adidas Classic

Raleigh, N.C. - The NC State men’s soccer team will make the short trip over to Durham, N.C., this weekend to take part in the 2006 Duke/adidas Classic at Duke’s Koskinen Stadium. The Wolfpack (1-1) will take on No. 24/18 South Florida on Friday at 5:00 p.m., and then face American on Sunday at 5:00 p.m.
NC State will be looking for a strong repeat performance in this years Duke/adidas Classic, as last season NC State won the tournament with a perfect 2-0 record. The Pack defeated No. 7 St. John’s 2-1, then came back two days later and beat College of Charleston 3-1.
NC State pulled out a dramatic 2-1 win over No. 7 St. John’s in the first game of the Duke/adidas Tournament. Matthew Lytle netted his first career goal with just five seconds remaining for the Wolfpack to complete the second half comeback. The Pack finished with four members on the all-tournament team. Forwards Aaron King and Bryant Salter, midfielder John Queeley and defender Rami Ghanayem were all named, and Salter earned MVP honors.
So far this season for NC State, the Pack is off to a 1-1 start, having defeated St. Francis (N.Y.) 1-0 and losing to Hartford 2-0 in last weekends Wolfpack Classic. Redshirt-freshman Chris Widman has got the nod in goal in each game, and recorded his first career shutout against St. Francis (N.Y.). The Wolfpack offense will be looking to find the back of the more this weekend, as freshman Sean Campbell registered the only goal last weekend.
South Florida is currently ranked No. 24 in the Soccer America Poll and No. 18 in the NSCAA Poll after going 1-1 over the first week of the season. The Bulls won at Florida International 1-0 to start the season, but fell at home to Fordam 2-1 last weekend. Yohance Marshall, one of the top defenders in the BIG EAST, will be forced to miss the NC State game due to a red card.
American is coming into this weekend with a perfect 2-0 record, having won the D.C. College Cup last week. The Eagles defeated Howard 2-0, and also defeated Georgetown 2-1 to start the season. For their efforts, three American players swept the Patriot League Player of the Week honors. Senior Sal Cacavale scored the game-winning goal in each contest, while the defense was rewarded with Nigel White being named Defensive Player of the Week and keeper Chris Sedlak was the top goalkeeper last week.
