CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The NC State volleyball team fell to East Tennessee State in the first of two matches on Saturday, Aug. 26, in Charlotte, N.C. in the second and final day of the Spring Hill Suites Classic. Sophomore Jessica Williams led the team with 14 kills. With the loss, the Pack stands at 0-2 on the young season.
“The team responded well to the loss last night with better effort and better play this morning,” said head coach Charita J. Stubbs. “We have to put everything together. We have to cut out our mental mistakes and put together a complete match."
The Wolfpack got off to a solid start by taking the first game from the Buccaneers, 28-30. ETSU then bounced back to grab the second game, 30-23, before winning a see-saw battle in the third, 32-30, in extended play. The Buccaneers wrapped up the match by securing the fourth game, 30-25.
“We took the first game and we led in the third, but late in the match our youthfulness caught up with us and really started to show,” said Stubbs. “East Tennessee State has a lot of veterans, and their experience proved too much for us at times.”
The Buccaneers roster features four seniors, four juniors and just three freshmen. By contrast, the Pack rotation includes two seniors, three juniors, five sophomores and five freshmen.
NC State will end its stay at the Spring Hill Suites Classic tonight with a 7 p.m. match against tournament host Charlotte.
The red and white will host its own tournament, the Wolfpack Classic, next Friday, Sept. 1 through Saturday, Sept. 2 at Reynolds Coliseum on the NC State campus. Northern Colorado, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and Winthrop will round out the tournament field.
