Raleigh, N.C. - The NC State men’s soccer team got its 2006 season off to a good start with a hard fought 1-0 win over St. Francis (N.Y.) in the first game of the Adidas Wolfpack Classic played Saturday afternoon at Method Road. After a scoreless first half, freshman Sean Campbell headed in a free kick in the 70th minute for the games lone goal. The Wolfpack (1-0) will turn right around and host Hartford, Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at Method Road.
Both teams went into the half deadlocked in a scoreless tie, as neither side had a solid scoring chance. NC State had five first half shots, while St. Francis had three.
The game would remain scoreless until the 70th minute. After a St. Francis foul right at midfield, junior Hugh Cronin lined up the free kick and sent the ball into the 18-yard box. Freshman Sean Campbell out jumped two Terrier defenders, and headed the ball straight into the net at the 69:58 mark. Campbell notched his first career goal in his first career contest.
Just as the clock was winding down, St. Francis made one last run at the NC State goal. The ball was played from the right wing into the penalty yard box, and John Baptist Joseph’s last ditch shot with five seconds left hit off the post and was covered up by the Wolfpack defense.
The Wolfpack won the overall shot tally with a 13-7 advantage. Redshirt freshman Chris Widman made his first career start in goal, and picked up the shutout having to make just one save.
The Wolfpack will be in action tomorrow afternoon, taking on Hartford at 1:00 p.m. at Method Road.
