NC State women’s soccer kicks off the 2006 season with its home opener against Western Carolina at 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 25. The Wolfpack also welcomes UNC Wilmington on Sunday at 4 p.m. Both of NC State’s matches this weekend, along with all of its home matches, will be played at Method Road Soccer Stadium. Friday’s match marks the season opener for the Catamounts as well.
Leading the charge for NC State on the pitch are seven returning starters from a year ago, including team captain, Michelle Massey. Massey is a three-time team MVP and has started all 55 matches of her career with the Pack. Sophomore Lindsay Vera, a 2005 Atlantic Coast Conference All-Freshmen team member, returns as one of two forwards in the Wolfpack lineup. She led NC State in scoring last year, along with senior midfielder Carol Tognetti, with five goals each.
In net for NC State is senior Megan Connors, who as a sophomore, was a full-time started and posted nine shutouts in that time.
Head coach Laura Kerrigan enters her 10th season at the helm of the Wolfpack.
Western Carolina brings a solid force to Raleigh, after having clinched the Southern Conference Tournament title last year. The Catamounts posted a record of 18-6, which helped it to an NCAA Tournament appearance. This year’s group returns 12 players, six of which were starters in 2005. WCU is led by second year head coach Tammy CeCesare.
