PITTSFORD, N.Y. (July 28, 2006) -- The Buffalo Bills agreed on a five-year contract with former NC State defensive tackle John McCargo, the second of the team's two first-round draft picks. McCargo's agent, Hadley Engelhard, said he expected his client to sign the deal when he arrived at the Bills training camp site in suburban Rochester later in the day. The move came shortly after the team held its first practice of camp.
McCargo was selected 26th overall out of NC State, where he was a three-year starter and played on the same line as ends Mario Williams, the first player taken in the draft by Houston, and Manny Lawson, selected 22nd by San Francisco.
In Buffalo, McCargo is expected to open the season as a backup to Larry Tripplett.
Listed at 6-foot-2 and 301 pounds, McCargo is noted for his quickness and ability to penetrate, strong assets in the style of defense the Bills intend to play under new coach Dick Jauron.
As a sophomore, McCargo helped the Wolfpack become the nation's top-ranked defensive team. Last fall, which was his junior campaign, he missed six games with a foot injury.
