NC State women's golf concluded its 2006 season with a fifth-straight invitation to the NCAA Regionals and as many trips in six seasons. The Pack finished 16th of 21 teams and was led by sophomore Stephanie Derrey's 9-over par performance of 225, which put her in a tie for 44th place. Overall, the 38th ranked Wolfpack finished in the top 10 of five of its 10 tournaments this season, which included winning the Papa Johns Collegiate back on Feb. 21. Individually, NC State was led by Derrey, who completed her second year on the squad with a stroke average of 76.26. She had four top 20 finishes and one top 10 finish.
Along the way, NC State junior Nancy Mountcastle highlighted the individual performances after she placed third at the 2006 Atlantic Coast Conference Championships. She shot a six over par 222. Senior Lorraine Ballerano also finished under 77 for her average, with a stroke output of 76.47 on the year. She shot two games of 6-over par (Cougar Classic and Papa John's) and had her best finish of third place at the Papa John's Collegiate. Derrey and Ballerno were the two lone Wolfpackers to compete in all 10 events, while senior Molly Birmingham and Mountcastle each missed just one tournament. Birmingham finished third on the squad with her stroke average of 77.2. Freshman Lauren Doughtie was fifth in stroke average with her 78.5 showing. Sophomore Lauren Harling competed in four events and capped her second season with a stroke average of 78.7. Sophomore Jessica Vincent rounded out the group of seven with her average of 78.9 after eight events.
