RALEIGH, N.C. - Matt Mangini led a powerful Wolfpack attack with a home run and two doubles, scoring in his first three plate appearances and Gob Hobson pitched seven strong innings as NC State defeated Miami 9-2 in the first game of a three-game Atlantic Coast Conference series at Doak Field at Dail Park.
The Wolfpack bats touched up Hurricanes pitching for three home runs and three doubles out of ten hits. The solid offense provided more than enough cushion for Hobson who allowed just two runs on eight hits.
NC State cashed in with two outs in the bottom half of the fifth inning for four runs on three hits, including two home runs, all after two men had been retired. Mangini started the rally with a solo shot to dead center field to make the score 6-1 in favor of the Pack. Brian Aragon followed with a single to left field and Ryan Pond's walk set the table for Caleb Mangum to put the game out of reach. Mangum belted a three-run bomb over the left-field fence and gave the Wolfpack a 9-1 lead.
The Wolfpack scored twice in the fourth inning when Mangini led off by slapping a double to right-center and scored from third on an RBI single by Pond. Pond moved to second on the single by Mangum and took third on a groundout by Jonathan Diaz. Matt Camp's RBI infield single brought Pond to the plate and made the score 5-1.
Slugger Aaron Bates drove in a pair of runs in the third inning when he smashed a two-run home run down the left-field line with two outs in the inning.
NC State broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the second when Mangini led off with a double to left-center. Aragon moved him to third with a long fly ball to center field and Pond's RBI groundout to second brought the run home and gave the Pack a 1-0 lead.
Miami answered in the top of the third when center fielder Jon Jay led off with a single and stole second. He moved to third when Mangum's throw got through Corona at second base for an error, and scored on Danny Valencia's groundout to third to even the score 1-1.
Miami tried to mount a comeback against Hobson during his final inning of work, the seventh. Roger Tomas led off with a single and moved to second on the sacrifice bunt by Blake Tekotte. Jay grounded out to first to advance Tomas to third, and Jemile Weeks fisted a single into center field scoring Tomas to make the score 9-2 in favor of the Wolfpack.
The victory improves NC State to 32-13 overall and 13-8 in the ACC. NC State dropped to 27-15 and 12-9. Hobson (6-1) earned the win, giving up two runs, only one of them earned, on eight hits in seven innings. He walked two and struck out five. Carlos Gutierrez (8-5), meanwhile, was tagged with the loss after pitching 4 2/3 innings, allowing eight runs on nine hits. He walked one and struck out one.
NC State and Miami will play the second game of the series at Doak Field at Dail Park on Saturday at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on WKNC-FM (88.1) and online at gopack.com. Fox Sports Net South will televise the game.
