Crews, Wheatley Earn All-ACC Honors In 10K

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - John Crews and Lee Ann Wheatley earned all-conference honors in the 10,000m to lead NC State in the opening day of the ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championships Thursday evening at Wake Forest University's Kentner Stadium. Crews was the runner-up in the men's race with a time of 30:26.25 and Wheatley ran a 35:55.97 for third place in the women's race.
Ginger Wheeler took fifth place in the 10K with a time of 36:09.49, scoring for the Wolfpack. Abigail Nelkie also scored in the 10K with an eighth place finish at 37:12.81. Bobby Mack picked up two points for the men's team with his seventh place finish in the 10K, running a 31:28.43 in his season debut.
Mitchell Pope placed ninth in the hammer throw with a mark of 178-7 and Chris Crawford took 12th at 168-0. Brie Ward hit 146-8 in the women's hammer for 14th place.
Laila Thomas and Mattie Bethea stand sixth and seventh respectively after four of seven events in the heptathlon. Thomas ran a career best 14.71 in the 100m hurdles for fifth place, tied for second with Bethea in the high jump at 5-6.5, reached 30-6.25 for 10th in the shot put and ran a career best 25.85 for sixth place in the 200m. Bethea ran a career best 26.29 for 10th place in the 200m, reached 33-5.75 for ninth place in the shot put and ran a 15.33 for 11th in the 100m hurdles.
After the first day of competition, the NC State men's team is in fourth place and the Wolfpack women are in seventh. Competition continues Friday before concluding Saturday. Complete results, including live scoring, event schedules and start lists, are available at www.theacc.com.
