NC State used pitching, defense and timely hitting to win the final game of a three-game set against Maryland, 3-0, on Sunday at Walnut Creek Softball Complex. Shaina Ervin (11-2) and Abbie Sims (S, 2) combined for a four-hit shutout and Jen Chamberlin went 2-for-3 with a RBI double for the Wolfpack (32-13, 6-3 ACC). NC State is tied for second place in the league, while the Terrapins fall to 19-17 and 2-7 in the ACC.
NC State jumped out in front in the first inning with one run on two hits. Heather Gelbard led off with a single up the middle, and Tess Corona came in to run. Corona moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Shanna Smith. Jen Chamberlin ripped the first pitch she saw into the gap in right centerfield to score Corona for the early Wolfpack lead.
Maryland tried to answer right back after a leadoff double in the second by Lindsey Klein. A sacrifice bunt moved her to third with one out, and Whitney Reigel was hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners. Devon Williams grounded out to third, and Reigel was tagged out for an inning ending double play after she ran back to first base thinking Williams' ground ball was foul.
Ervin allowed just two more singles in the next three innings, and finished with four strikeouts while allowing just three singles in five innings of work.
Sims came on to pitch in the sixth, and struck out the first two batters before allowing a single and hitting a batter. Terps catcher Nikki Smith hit a flyout to centerfield to end the threat.
Ashleigh Davis singled to lead off the bottom of the Wolfpack sixth, and Terrapin centerfielder Abbey Welch came in to pitch in relief of Crews. Gelbard reached on a fielder's choice and Davis was out at second on the play for the first out of the inning. Smith hit a grounder to third, and Lindsey Ubrun's throw to second was wide of the bag for an error. Gelbard came around to score with Smith close on her heels, with both runners scoring as the ball rolled to the wall for a 3-0 Wolfpack lead.
Crews (12-8) took the loss for Maryland, allowing five hits, two runs (one earned) and striking out four.
Abbie Sims (S, 2) pitched two innings and allowed one hits while striking out three and walking two Terps. She walked a pair with two out in the seventh, but got Jenny Belak to pop up to end the game.
