Wolfpack Softball Wins 40th with Game Two Win over Elon

Shaina Ervin (14-3) tossed a four-hit shutout as NC State improved to 40-17 with a 2-0 win over Elon (19-22) in game two of a doubleheader. Abbie Sims hit her seventh home run of the season and Jennifer Patterson hit a two-out RBI double for the other Wolfpack run. The team has now posted back-to-back 40 win seasons in its first three years of softball.
NC State scored in the third, getting one run on one hit in the inning. Chamberlin reached on a fielder's choice with two outs, and Jennifer Patterson ripped a double into the right centerfield gap to plate Chamberlin.
Abbie Sims led off the fourth inning with her seventh home run of the season, and sixth in the last 15 games, to put NC State up 2-0.
The Phoenix loaded the bases with one out in the sixth on a single, walk and hit batter. Shaina Ervin made a clutch defensive play on a ball to get the force at home for the second out, and Chamberlin made a strong throw at third to record the final out at first by a step.
Ervin finished with a complete game shutout, allowing four hits and one walk while fanning six batters to improve to 14-3 on the season.
The team travels to Charlottesville, Va. for a three-game set with the Cavaliers this weekend.
