Wolfpack Offense Erupts in 8-1 Rout of Elon

Jen Chamberlin hit two doubles and drove in three runs and Lisa Nentwig hit her third homer of the season as NC State (39-17) downed Elon, 8-1. Abbie Sims (19-10) fanned 10 batters and allowed three hits for the win over the Phoenix (19-21) in Elon, N.C. The win in the first game of the doubleheader snapped a five-game Elon win streak over the Wolfpack.
NC State loaded the bases in the second with no outs. Sims and Megan Dalthorp hit back-to-back singles to get things going and Lisa Nentwig drew a walk to load them up. Carol Lilley came up big with three straight strikeouts to end the inning.
The Wolfpack did put runs on in the third, scoring three runs in the inning on five hits. Smith led off the inning with a double into the gap, and Chamberlin followed with a RBI double of her own for the 1-0 lead. Beth Poore came in to run and stole third, and Megan Dalthorp singled into left to make it 2-0. Nentwig drew her second walk of the game and Tess Corona singled into left to load the bases. Blair Harkey slapped a RBI single, her third career RBI to give NC State a 3-0 lead.
Two more runs came across in the fourth, as Smith and Chamberlin both singled to start the inning, with Smith moving to third on Chamberlin's hit. Miranda Ervin drove in her 40th run of the season with a single to make it 5-0, one RBI off of the school record.
Lisa Nentwig took the first pitch of the fifth inning over the left field wall for her third home run of the season to make it 6-0.
Jaimie Rao homered to left to lead off the fifth to trim the Wolfpack lead to 6-1.
Chamberlin added a two-run double for the final 8-1 score.
Sims' 10 strikeouts moved her into seventh all-time on the career list in the ACC for strikeouts.
Shanna Smith tied a career-high with three runs scored and hit her eighth double of the season for NC State.
The 13 Wolfpack hits were the second most in a game this season after pounding out 14 in a win over Gardner-Webb.
