NC State (36-15) scored nine runs in the fourth and fifth innings combined to break the game open, winning 11-0 in five innings over Charlotte (29-11) in game one of a doubleheader. Miranda Ervin tied a career-high with four RBIs and Heather Gelbard and Jen Chamberlin each drove in a pair of runs. Abbie Sims (17-9) struck out 11 batters and allowed two singles and two walks in the win.
Shanna Smith singled in the first and stole second for her ACC-leading 24th steal of the season. Jen Chamberlin's groundout moved Smith to third, and Miranda Ervin popped up to end the inning with no runs scoring as the offense showed threatened early.
Sims allowed a walk in each of the first two innings, with a one-out single from Kaycie Jones moving Emily Forbes to second after she walked. Miranda Ervin picked off Forbes at second, however, and Sims fanned Laurie Roycroft to end the inning. The 49ers wouldn't threaten again.
NC State loaded the bases in the third as Heather Gelbard walked, Smith was hit by a pitch, and Chamberlin walked with one out. Ervin flared the 1-2 pitch into center to drive in a pair of runs and stake the Wolfpack to a 2-0 lead.
The Wolfpack added five more runs in the fourth to build a 7-0 advantage. Gelbard singled in the first run, with Nentwig scoring after a leadoff walk. Chamberlin hit a two-run single to plate Ashleigh Davis and Gelbard, and Ervin drove in pair with her second two-run single of the game for a 7-0 lead.
The lead ballooned to 11-0 with four more Wolfpack runs in the fifth. Dalthorp singled and moved to second as the ball rolled into the dugout. Alycia LePage came in to run, and Nentwig singled to move LePage to third. Davis reached on an error to load the bases, and pinch-hitter Allison Cuculich singled to center to plate LePage. Nentwig scored on a wild pitch, and Gelbard and Smith both hit sacrifice flies for the final 11-0 tally.
Sims cruised with the big lead, striking out 11, the 36th time in her career she has fanned double digit batters in a game.
