RALEIGH N.C. - UCLA didn't just make it a sweep on Sunday. The Bruins took NC State behind the woodshed and laid the lumber to the Wolfpack, exploding for seven runs in the third inning, bashing out five home runs, and coasting to a 13-2 rout in the final game of a three-game series at Doak Field.
The sweep evened UCLA's record for the season at 9-9. NC State, which lost three straight games for the first time since March 18-20 last season at Georgia Tech, dropped to 13-4.
Junior righthander Tyson Brummett (2-3) abused the NC State lineup with an assortment of breaking pitches, allowing just two runs, one earned, on six hits in eight innings. He struck out 12 and did not issue a walk. For NC State, the 12 strikeouts were the most in a game since March 4, 2005, against Miami's Cesar Carillo. Wolfpack starter Andrew Brackman (0-1) had his worst outing in a Wolfpack uniform, and NC State lost a game in which Brackman appeared for the first time. The 6-10 sophomore gave up five runs on six hits, including two home runs, in 2 1/3 innings. He struck out two and did not walk a batter.
UCLA, which swept a three-game series on the road for the first time in six years, set season highs with 13 runs and 18 hits, and numerous players made big contributions. Chris Jensen finished a huge series for the Bruins, going 2-for-5 with a double, a home runs and four RBIs. Jensen went 4-for-12 with two homers and nine RBIs in the series. Brandon Cawford also capped a big series with a 2-for-5 day. He went 6-for-14 with a double, triple and a home run in the series. And Hector Ambriz went 1-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs. He finished the series with five hits, two of them homers, and six RBIs in 12 at-bats.
Caleb Mangum came off the bench to go 2-for-2 for the Wolfpack, and Drew Martin drove in a run with a single.
The game was scoreless through the first two innings. Bruins put runners in scoring position in both innings, but did not score. They broke through in a big way in the top of the third, driving Brackman to an early shower. Crawford hammered a one-out double past a diving Aaron Bates at first base and into the right-field corner. Crawford took third base on a passed ball, and Brackman hit Jermaine Curtis with a pitch to put runners on the corners. Jensen hit a long home run to right field to make it 3-0. Tim Stewart doubled down the left-field line, and Ambriz hit a ball off the bottom of the scoreboard that initially was ruled in play, but was changed to a two-run homer.
Jason Duncan came in for Brackman at that point, but the onslaught continued. Anthony Norman walked, and Sean Smith hit a long homer onto the soccer practice field behind the left-field fence, giving the Bruins a 7-0 lead. The seven-run inning was the biggest by an NC State opponent this season.
The Wolfpack got one run back in the bottom half of the inning when Jonathan Diaz doubled into the right-field corner and scored on Matt Camp's single through the right side of the infield. UCLA got that run back in the top of the fourth on Stewart's two-out solo homer to dead center field.
Crawford led off the top of the sixth with a grounder off of Bates's glove for an error, then stole second base. Jensen's one-out grounder to second base moved Curtis to third, and he scored on Stewart's single to right to make it 9-1.
The Bruins, who scored four unearned runs in the game, took advantage of sloppy Wolfpack defense in the top of the seventh. Josh Roenicke hit a one-out single up the middle, then was safe when Camp, playing shortstop, kicked a potential double-play grounder off the bat of Ryan Babineau. After Crawford struck out, pinch-hitter Brett McMillan and Jensen hit back-to-back doubles to drive in three runs and make it a 12-1 game.
Caleb Mangum led off the bottom of the seventh for the Wolfpack, singled to center field, took second base on a wild pitch, went to third on a passed ball, and scored on Drew Martin's infield single. McMillen led off the top of the ninth with a solo homer to right for the game's final run.
