NC State Softball Falls in Championship of Buzz Classic to Yellow Jackets
Heather Gelbard, a junior from Miami, Fla., was named to the all-tournament team at the Buzz Classic after a sterling performance at the plate. She hit .444 and had a seven game hitting streak, collecting a tournament-best five home runs. She drove in 10 runs and hit two home runs against Georgia Southern to tie a school record. NC State finished second by posting a 6-1 record at the Buzz Classic.
She hit home runs in back-to-back games twice in the tournament and was hitting .478 heading into the championship game against the Yellow Jackets. Her 1-for-4 performance lowered her tournament average 34 points, but she was instrumental in sparking the run to the championship game.
Gelbard leads the team in batting average and hits this season at a .324 clip with 23 hits. Her 12 RBIs rank third on the team and is second in doubles with three. Her five long balls also is tied for the team lead.
