NC State (9-5) lost for just the second time in the last ten games with a 3-0 defeat to the South Carolina Gamecocks at the Gamecock Invitational in Columbia, S.C. The Wolfpack's Abbie Sims (5-3) struck out 13 batters but the offense failed to score runs for the third time in her three losses. Jess Willems and Sims both singled for NC State.
Both pitchers came out of the gate throwing strikes, with NC State getting two runners on in the second for the only base runners for either team through three-and-a-half innings.
Sims struckout the first nine Gamecocks' batters of the game and didn't allow a base runner until Jessica Josker singled over the glove of Shanna Smith at short in the fourth.
South Carolina put a run on the board after Josker's single, as Christie Hamilton drew a two-out walk to move Josker to second. Lisa Longo collected a RBI single off of Sims to drive in Josker for a 1-0 lead.
Longo drove in the second run of the game with a two-out triple past the glove of a diving Blair Harkey to score McKenna Hughes from second with two outs. Ashley Smith blooped a pitch into right field to plate Hughes for a 3-0 Gamecocks lead.
Christie Hamilton (6-3) got the win for South Carolina by striking out 10 batters.
