MIAMI LAKES, Fla. - The NC State women's golf team won the Papa John's Collegiate Feb. 19-21 at Don Shula's par 72 Golf Resort in Miami Lakes, Fla. The Wolfpack beat No. 13 Virginia and No. 47 Alabama, winning by four strokes with a 54-hole total of 28 over par.
NC State made one of its greatest comebacks in the program's six-year history following a 22-over first round with a school record second round of one under, leaping from 10th place to first. The Pack shot seven over in the final round to extend its lead over the 12-team field. The championship is NC State's first since winning three straight tournaments in 2001-02.
Lorraine Ballerano led the Wolfpack, carding a six over par total to tie for third place. It was the best finish in Ballerano's collegiate career, as the senior from Myrtle Beach, S.C., improved one stroke each day to finish with a 222, tying for ninth place in school history.
Fellow senior co-captain Molly Birmingham finished one stroke behind Ballerano and tied for fifth place. Her second round score of one under was a six-stroke improvement from the first day. Stephanie Derrey tied for 10th place at eight over. The sophomore from Paris, France tied the school record with a second round 68.
Lauren Harling came in two over in the final round to finish plus 15 and tied for 31st place. Nancy Mountcastle finished one stroke behind Harling and tied for 33rd after firing one over in the final round. Lauren Doughtie and Jessica Vincent also competed as individuals.
Christina Jones from South Florida took home medalist honors with an even par total. Complete results from the Papa John's Collegiate are available at www.hurricanesports.com and www.golfstat.com. The Wolfpack returns to action next week at the LSU/Cleveland Golf Classic at the University Club in Baton Rouge, La., March 3-5.
