NC State announced today the hiring of Charita J. Stubbs as the head volleyball coach. Stubbs, the Associate Head Coach at the University of Arizona, leaves Tucson after nine seasons with the Wildcats, helping Arizona reach the NCAA Tournament every single year and finish in the top 25 in all but one of those seasons.
"We are extremely happy to have Charita Stubbs as our new volleyball coach," Lee Fowler said, NC State Director of Athletics. "She comes from a top 20 caliber program at Arizona after having a tremendous playing career there. She sees the potential in our program and we are very excited about the future of NC State volleyball with her on board."
Involved in all coaching aspects at Arizona, Stubbs has coached at least one middle blocker to all-conference honors every year for the past eight seasons. Promoted from assistant coach to associate head coach in 2000, Stubbs helped bring in the nation's top-ranked recruiting class in 2002. Highly involved in youth club volleyball, Stubbs has served as head coach for the Zona Volleyball Club since 2001 and worked as an assistant volleyball coach at the renowned High Performance Camp in Salt Lake City. Stubbs has also served as an assistant coach for the U.S. Junior National team that qualified for the 2001 World Championships in Mexico.
"I am very excited about this opportunity at NC State and am looking forward to getting started," said Stubbs. "To turn this program around will certainly be a challenge and it will take time, but the potential is there with the support of the university and the amazing facilities."
The first player in Arizona history to record 300 kills, 300 digs and 100 blocks in one season, the former Charita Johnson led the Wildcats to back-to-back Sweet 16 appearances at the 1993 and 1994 NCAA Tournaments. A four-year starting middle blocker from 1990-94, she earned All-Pac-10 and All-West Region honors as a senior and still holds school records for career (117) and single match (8) solo blocks.
A member of the 1993 and 1994 United States Olympic Festival volleyball, Stubbs played professionally in France in 1995. Currently working towards her Ph.D. in educational administration, Stubbs earned a bachelor of arts degree in political science from the University of Arizona in 1994 and received her master's in language, reading and culture from Arizona in 1995. She is fluent in French and is a certified teacher.
Stubbs becomes the seventh head coach in the Wolfpack's 31st year of volleyball and the first African-American female to be named a head coach at NC State. She inherits a volleyball team that has finished last in the ACC the last six years, winning only three conference matches in that span.
A lifetime member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Stubbs is also very involved with the Babtist Church. She hails from Cleveland, Ohio and is married to Melvin Stubbs.
