RALEIGH, N.C. — The NC State baseball program signed 17 players to scholarship agreements during the November signing period, associate head coach and recruiting coordinator Tom Holliday announced today.
The Wolfpack landed 10 high school players and seven junior-college transfers. The signing class includes seven pitchers, six infielders, three outfielders and one catcher. Geographically, the high school signees come from North Carolina, South Carolina, Ohio, West Virginia and Rhode Island. Six of the seven junior college signees are from schools in Florida, the other from California.
“We believe we’ve solved some immediate needs with this class,” Holliday said. “We also think that we’ve added some players who project as guys that can help us down the road in the long term.”
Six of the 10 high school recruits are in-state players, including outfielder Quincy Latimore of Middle Creek High School in Apex and infielder Dusty Quattlebaum of Crest High School in Shelby. Latimore batted .352 with four home runs, 25 RBIs and 16 steals in 17 attempts at Middle Creek as a junior in 2006. Quattlebaum ranked among the state’s top hitters with a .443 average, eight home runs and 27 RBIs in 2006 for Crest.
In-state, the Wolfpack also signed righthanded pitchers Jake Buchannan of North Gaston High School in Gastonia, Vance Williams of Athens Drive High School in Raleigh, Seth Simmons of Calvary Baptist High School in Lewisville, and Grant Sasser of C.B. Aycock High School in Goldsboro.
Nationally, the Wolfpack signed three high school pitchers and five junior college infielders.
Scott Moviel of St. Edwards High School in Berea, Ohio, is a 6-foot-10, 245-pound righthander who drew national recruiting interest. He will be the second recent skyscraper righthanded pitcher for the Wolfpack, following in the footsteps of current Wolfpack hurler Andrew Brackman, who stands 6-foot-9. Moviel has two older brothers in professional baseball — lefthander Greg Moviel with the Seattle Mariners and righthander Paul Moviel with the Chicago White Sox. Moviel’s brothers both stand 6-foot-6.
Gary Gillheeney of Bishop Hendricken High School in Providence, R.I., is the younger brother of current NC State freshman lefthander Jimmy Gillheeney. Unlike his brother, the younger Gillheeney is righthanded. Like his brother, Gary Gillheeney was recruited nationally before deciding to sign with the Wolfpack.
NC State signed five junior college infielders — Jovan Rosa of Lake City (Fla.) Community College, Joe Florio of Indian River (Fla.) Community College, Sean Morrison of Manatee (Fla.) Community College, Devon Cartwright of Palm Beach (Fla.) Community College, and Kyle Prewitt of Sacramento City (Calif.) College — plus catcher Nick Stanley from South Florida Community College and outfielder Mike Gatlin from Daytona Beach (Fla.) Community College.
Of the junior college signees, Rosa has been selected twice in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, in the 39th round by the Chicago White Sox in 2005, and in the 22nd round by the Chicago Cuns in 2006. He ranked second among Florida junior college players in ’06 with 14 doubles and 45 RBIs. He batted .379 (53-for-140) with three home runs and earned first-team all-conference in the Mid-Florida Conference.
