The nine participating schools were Apex Middle, Lufkin Road Middle, Davis Drive Middle, West Millbrook Middle, Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School, St. Mary Magdalene Catholic School,
A total of 395 students participated throughout the course of the project. Each student vowed to read 10 books and write a brief report on each during the course of the 10-week project. Each student who completed the requirement received a certificate of accomplishment and free tickets to the Dec. 4 women’s basketball game against
The program, coordinated and implemented by Danielle Boucher of the Academic Support staff, made an immediate impact on its participants, according to their teachers.
“Your program has made a big difference in the lives of my students,” said Amanda Henry, a language arts teacher at St. Mary Magdalene School.
More than 300 students and parents attended the game, which the Wolfpack won 65-54. They had the chance to become acquainted with 40 Wolfpack athletes, who signed autographs and mingled with the students before, during and after the game.
“The night was absolutely amazing,” Boucher said. “I was so proud and so motivated by the athletes and the middle school students. The night was a success and I can’t wait to do it again next year.”
Phil Moses, the director of NC State’s Academic Support Program for Athletes, praised the student-athletes’ participation in a worthy academic cause.
“Promoting literacy and the joy of reading remain as the driving goals for the Booking With the Pack" reading program,” Moses said. “Danielle Boucher did an outstanding job of outlining, directing and facilitating the components of the program. The women’s basketball game was the backdrop for the celebration of the successful completion of the reading program for a few hundred middle school students.
“Our student-athletes once again represented the University in first-class fashion as they shared autographs and stories with the students. Danielle has created something very special that will allow us to make a difference in the lives of several students as they progress through their middle school years.”
