Raleigh, N.C. - NC State head volleyball coach Charita J. Stubbs has announced the signing of three student-athletes which will join the Wolfpack program next season, and her excitement over the talented trio is easy to see. Stubbs' 2007 class has already created a buzz in prep and club circles months in advance of setting foot on campus, as all three were sought-after players among many collegiate programs.
"I am really excited about the entire class," said Stubbs. "The coaching staff was fortunate to be able to recruit these young women for a good amount of time, getting to know and develop relationships with them. Each of them will have an opportunity to join NC State next season and make an immediate impact."
Megan Rehmer, Alex Smith and Lauren Zaniboni will each enroll at NC State and compete for the red and white in the '07 season. All three hold solid playing experience with nationally competitive club programs. Two of the signees hail from California, with the third coming from Indiana.
Rehmer will enter Raleigh via Greenwood, Ind., where she attends Center Grove High School. At 5-foot-10, Rehmer will serve as an outside hitter / right side for Stubbs' unit next season. She has been competing with the Munciana Volleyball Club.
"Megan is a banger-type of player that can score points extremely well," said Stubbs. "She is very athletic and is a true competitor. She is a no-nonsense volleyball player that will aid our team in giving us more of a competitive nature and fire on the floor."
Smith of Placentia, Calif., is in her final year at Valencia High School and has been playing with the Impact Volleyball Club. Her 5-foot-9 frame will add depth and talent to the Pack's setter rotation.
"Alex is one of the most quick-footed setters that I have ever seen," said Stubbs. "She has been playing at a high level and has been setting for two years now. She's an athlete with huge hands and a highly competitive spirit."
Zaniboni, a native of San Diego, Calif., rounds out the signing class. A senior at Torrey Pines High School, Zaniboni plays with the Epic Volleyball Club. The tallest of the incoming players at 6-foot-2, Zaniboni will play on the right side.
"Lauren comes from a good club team," said Stubbs. "She is a very physical player with great scoring ability. She is a left-handed opposite that will give us the height that we need to compete at this level."
The three new faces will replace two current players that finish their careers at the end of the year. Melissa Rabe and Lyssa Ramirez, both seniors, will bow out of the program when their eligibility ends at the close of this season.
The NC State volleyball team will host Georgia Tech and Clemson this weekend, continuing Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) play. The Pack will face the Yellow Jackets on Friday, Nov. 10, at 7 p.m. in Reynolds Coliseum, before taking on the Tigers on Saturday, Nov. 11, at 6 p.m. in the Dail Basketball Center. Only the first 100 fans will be admitted into the Dail Center for the match against Clemson.
