Allison is one of three seniors on this year's Wolfpack women's tennis team. Throughout the year, Allison, Lauren, and Agustina will be posting weekly blogs about what it is like to be a member of a Division I athletic team including personal insights on competition and experiences shared amongst the team. The blog's title, Sisterhood, has an important meaning to the team. Each player does not only consider themselves teammates but part of a sisterhood where they will learn to share four years of their lives with other student-athletes from all around the world who enjoy playing tennis and having the opportunity to be part of the Wolfpack.
Right before the holidays, teammate and friend Julia Roach awoke to a fire knocking on the door of her apartment. The fire started in the adjacent apartment but by the time the flames were put out, it had already consumed six units in Ivy Chase. Everyone made it out safe including Julia and her roommates. It was a reminder - not just during the holiday season - there is a lot to be thankful for.
Julia lost most of her things that morning when the fire started at 2:30 a.m. With firefighters working amongst unstable floors and ceilings, Julia watched knowing she would have to find a new place to live.
As the team heard the news early that morning, everyone quickly called Julia to make sure she was alright and to see if there was anything they could do.
"My team was there for me when I needed them the most. My coaches came to Ivy Chase early Friday morning after the fire to make sure I was ok. The girls gave me a duffel bag full of toiletries, candy, diet cokes, magazines.... After my traumatic experience, all my teammates and coaches were going out of their way to help me out.” Julia Roach stated.
In hours, the coaches sent their condolence and the team brought their support while Julia was starting to face the truths left by the fire. She had nothing left she could call her own. For the team, we wanted to give her something that she could.
What we realized was that in a few months time, we had learned a lot about Julia. When we brought her “her favorite things,” as Julia called them, in that duffle bag, we gave her things we hoped would make her laugh and make her smile.
Julia did smile when she saw the bag and commented later about that moment, “Their thoughtfulness meant a lot to me. I have a very special team.”
Julia affirmed one thing: The fire only further ignited the Pack that day. The fire drove us deeper into “sisterhood.”
