Raleigh, N.C. The NC State volleyball team lost to Florida State, 3-1, on Friday, Nov. 17 at Reynolds Coliseum on the NC State campus. The Pack took the first game before dropping three straight. Kelley Blakewood landed 13 kills to lead the Pack offense, while Jessica Williams added 12. Allison Davis set 40 assists as the team blocked eight total shots. In defeat, the red and white fall to 2-26 (0-19 ACC) on the year, while the Seminoles improve to 18-11 (12-8 ACC).
The Pack put up its highest hitting percentage of the night, .205, in the first game, collecting a 26-30 win. NC State took an early 3-4 lead on a Williams kill and never looked back. Florida State struggled with its serve, tallying seven service errors and eight attack errors. Blakewood and Williams both put in four kills apiece, while Chrissy Zirpolo landed three, as the Pack put up a match-high 13 kills.
The red and white’s poorest statistical performance of the night came in the second game, as the team hit -.054, had a match-low eight kills and a match-high 10 miscues. The Noles’ responded to their service woes in the first game by committing a lone service error while collecting 18 kills in the win, 30-18.
Although NC State put together a much better effort in the third frame, Florida State played its best game of the night, winning 30-15. Maloire Wessel drilled two of the Noles’ four service aces as the team hit .348 compared to the Pack’s .156 effort.
Florida State used 22 kills to take a heartbreaking fourth and final game from NC State in extended play, 33-31. The Pack held a 15-25 lead late in play, forcing an FSU timeout. The Seminoles then grabbed three-straight and forced the red and white to talk things over again. Following the second timeout, Florida State dominated. Down 26-29 with NC State serving for match point, the Noles’ tied the score with three consecutive points. Both teams exchanged leads for a brief period, before Florida State took a 32-31 lead on a Jackie BonSalle kill and followed with a Wessel service ace to wrap up play.
NC State will host its final home match of the season tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 18, taking on Miami at 6 p.m. The match begins at 6 p.m. and will be broadcast live online via ACC Select. For more information visit the ACC Select website.
The contest will also mark Senior Night for Melissa Rabe and Lyssa Ramirez as they close out their home careers in Reynolds Coliseum. Both seniors will be honored before play begins. Fans are encouraged to join the team for refreshments following the match.
