Men's Soccer Loses to Virginia Tech, 3-2

Raleigh, N.C. – The NC State men’s soccer team fell in an exciting ACC battle to visiting Virginia Tech, 3-2, Monday afternoon at Method Road. The Hokies (7-4-1, 1-3-1) struck first, but the Wolpack (4-7-1, 1-4-1 ACC) responded with two quick goals to jump ahead before the half. But it was a pair of second half Virginia Tech goals that gave them the road win.
The Hokies jumped on the scoreboard first in the 16th minute. Charles Champbell took a corner kick, and the ball bounced around in the box until Brent Dillie struck it in the net at the 15:38 mark.
NC State would respond with two goals in a two minute span. The scoring starting when Virginia Tech’s Dillie was issued a red card for a tackle from behind and the Pack was rewarded a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box. Senior Rami Ghanaymen slid the ball over to junior El Hadj Cisse who slotted the ball home at the 26:06 mark.
Less than two minutes later the Pack would strike again and take the lead. Freshman Jorge Mora found classmate Alan Sanchez in the top of the penalty box. Sanchez struck the ball to the far post for his team leading sixth goal of the season at 28:03.
The Pack went into the half with a 2-1 lead.
Virginia Tech would notch the only two scores of the second half for the road win. Marcus Reed struck first in the 55th minute off of a feed from Ben Nason to tie the score. Then it was Nason himself in the 73rd minute scoring the game winner.
NC State held a slight advantage in shots on the day, 11-10. The Pack’s Christopher Widman recorded two saves.
NC State will not play Liberty as scheduled tomorrow afternoon.
The Pack returns to action this Sunday afternoon, hosting Duke at Method Road at 2:00 p.m. on Senior Day.
