Raleigh, N.C. - The NC State men’s soccer team came from a goal down with less than four minutes remaining to advance to the quarterfinals of the 2006 ACC Men’s Soccer Tournament with a 4-3 win over Virginia Tech Tuesday afternoon in Germantown, Md. After a scoreless first half, the two teams combined for seven second-half goals, including two by the Wolfpack in the final four minutes. Sophomore Ronnie Bouemboue recorded a hat trick for the Pack, with two of his goals coming late in the second half.
The two teams played a defensive first 45 minutes, with each team only recording only three shots and neither finding the back of the net.
The Wolfpack struck first in the 48th minute of action. Freshman Orry Powers played a ball though to Bouemboue who netted his first goal of the contest at 47:24. Less than three minutes later, the Pack would add to its lead. Santiago Fusilier was taken down in the Hokies penalty box, and junior El Hadj Cisse converted the penalty kick for his fifth goal of the season at 50:11.
Virginia Tech would respond however, and score the next three goals of the game. Patrick Nyarko would score twice, in the 53rd minute and in the 64th minute, to even the score at 2-2.
Brent Dillie would then give Virginia Tech its first lead of the game with his goal at the 86:09 mark, and with less than four minutes to play.
NC State responded just 17 seconds after that score, when Fusilier found Bouemboue inside the PK box and he tied the game at the 86:26 mark. Bouemboue was not though yet, as he used a Cisse assist to net the gamewinner at the 87:54 mark.
Bouemboue’s hat trick was the first for a NC State player since a 2002 win over Charleston Southern, when Aaron King scored all three goals in the overtime win.
The Wolfpack advances to Wednesday’s quarterfinals, when NC State takes on top-seeded Duke at 2:30 p.m. You can watch all of the ACC Tournament action live on ACCSelect.com
