After placing eighth in the ACC, the NC State women’s soccer team (9-8-2, 3-7 ACC) will take on the regular season champion, North Carolina (18-1, 10-0 ACC), in game one of the ACC Tournament Quarterfinals. The game will take place at 12 p.m. at SAS Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. The two teams have not met in the post season since 2003, when UNC took the red and white out of the tournament with a 6-2 victory.
When the two teams met earlier in the season, NC State fell to the then No. 2 Tar Heels, 4-1, in Raleigh. Sophomore Lindsay Vera scored the lone goal for the Wolfpack less than a minute after Whitney Engen scored for UNC in the first half. With less than ten minutes to go before half time, Jaime Gilbert gave Carolina the lead by booting the ball past senior goalkeeper Megan Connors. Tobin Heath and Yael Averbuch scored the Tar Heels other two goals in the second half. Connors had seven saves in the loss.
North Carolina leads the ACC in goals (49), points (158), assists (60), and goals against average (0.36). NC State is second in the ACC for saves with 105 saves this season. Junior Jessica O'Rourke is tied for fourth for goals with eight.
