The NC State women’s basketball team will have its first challenge of the season, trying to beat its counter-part at Georgia Tech. The two teams won’t be facing off on the hardwoods, however, as they try to collect more pink lids from Yoplait yogurt cartons.
It’s all part of the “Save Lids to Save Lives” fundraising campaign, in which General Mills will donate 10 cents from every lid collected to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. General Mills hopes to raise $1.5 million between now and Dec. 31.
Members of the Wolfpack women’s team will be at FanZone prior to Thursday night’s nationally televised football game between NC State and
Fans and students can also drop off lids at the five C-Store locations around campus. Those who miss out on giving lids in the team competition can mail their lids to “Save Lids to Save Lives,” PO Box 72716, Rockford, MN, 55572-7016. For more information about the campaign, visit Yoplait's breast cancer awareness website.
Wolfpack head coach Kay Yow, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987 and 2004, has been active in promoting breast cancer awareness for years. She is the honorary chairman of Panera Bread’s “In the Pink” campaign to raise money for the Komen Foundation. Throughout October, Panera will sell pink ribbon bagels, with 25 cents from each sale going to the Komen Foundation’s Triangle chapter.
Raleigh Mayor Charles Meeker proclaimed October “Breast Cancer Awareness Month” in
You can join Coach Yow and the women’s basketball team at FanZone on Thursday evening. Yow will also be a guest on the set of “The Bobby Murray Tailgate Show,” to talk about the fundraising campaigns and the upcoming season.
[At our house, we have a 4-year-old and a 2-year-old who insist on having bagels and yogurt every morning at breakfast, because they want to help Coach Yow. They have yogurt for dessert after dinner as well. We consider ourselves a very “cultured” family.]

NOW THAT THE MAJOR LEAGUE regular season is over, it's time for those not involved in the play-offs to find something to do with their free time. For former NC State players Joey Devine and Colt Morton, that will mean participating in the Arizona Fall Baseball League, one of the top development leagues for top baseball prospects in the country.
They are the first former Wolfpack players to compete in the 15-year-old association of teams from around Arizona. Devine will play for the Peoria Javelinas, while Morton will play for the Peoria Saguaros. For more information, http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/app/index.jsp'sid=l119.
Devine, after recovering from a back injury, played at Single-A Myrtle Beach, Double-A Mississippi and Triple-A Richmond, before finishing the season with the Atlanta Braves for the second year in a row. Morton spent most of 2006 playing for San Diego's Double-A team in Mobile, Ala. In 41 games, Morton batted .266 with six home runs and 21 RBI.
