Raleigh, N.C. -- In the final regular season game, the NC State women’s soccer team (9-8-2, 3-7 ACC) fell, 3-2, in overtime to Virginia (10-6-2, 5-4-1 ACC) on Saturday, Oct. 28, at Method Road Soccer Stadium. Freshman Briana Cunningham and senior Megan Buescher netted the Wolfpack’s two goals, and Jess Rostedt and Julia Falk scored for Virginia. Senior goalkeeper Megan Connors posted nine saves in the match, and the red and white also had two team saves.
“It was a tough loss,” said NC State head coach Laura Kerrigan. “Our girls played a hard fought game, and Megan’s goal was great for the comeback. We just couldn’t put it away.”
The first shot of the game resulted in a goal for Virginia when Rostedt took a shot from 25 yards out. The ball went past Connors’ hands to the top left of the net. Two minutes later, the Cavaliers took a corner kick that resulted in Falk taking a shot, but senior Nicole Mayo made a save from the right corner of the net. Virginia’s defense did not allow the Wolfpack to make a shot until 25 minutes in when freshman Kendall Irby took the ball down the field, but Cavalier goalie Christina de Vries made the save. A minute later, Cunningham put the Pack on the board after dribbling the ball from midfield to about ten yards in front of the goal. The freshman forward drew the goalie out of the net and sailed the ball into the bottom right of the goal. With less than two minutes left in the match, Nikki Krzysik attempted to give the Cavaliers the lead going into the half with a shot to the top of the net, but Connors punched out the ball over the crossbar. At the end of the half, Virginia out shot the red and white 10-2, but the score remained tied 1-1.
Ten minutes into the second half, Jen Redmond took a corner for Virginia, and there was a scramble in front of the net as Caitlin Miskel took a shot. The Pack’s defenders were there to block the ball from going in. Four minutes later, Becky Sauerbrunn took a shot off of another Cavalier corner kick, but Buescher made a team save when she kicked it away from the net. Fifteen minute into the half, Rostedt tried for another goal by shooting the ball to the bottom left, but Connors batted the ball away. With six minutes left in the game, Falk scored the second Virginia goal from five feet in front of the box off of a pass from Miskel. Buescher responded less than two minutes later after taking a pass from freshman Meredith Parrilla with a header to the bottom left corner. The goal was Buescher’s first of the season, and the first of her collegiate career, and sent the game into overtime.
Rostedt scored the game winning goal six minutes into overtime with a shot from the left side that went past Connors’ hands.
The red and white will remain in Raleigh as they prepare for the ACC tournament next week.
