Raleigh, N.C. – The NC State volleyball team fell to Virginia, 3-0, on Saturday, Oct. 28, at Reynolds Coliseum on the NC State campus. Chrissy Zirpolo and Keshia Raibon both produced nine kills each to lead the Wolfpack offense. Allison Davis pushed up 23 assists, while the team recorded seven total blocks. With the loss, the Pack falls to 2-20 (0-13 ACC) on the season, while the Cavaliers climb to 17-6 (10-4 ACC).
The red and white mustered a paltry -.098 hitting percentage in game one while creating 13 errors. Virginia, who only stumbled to four errors, used a 10 point run to build an 18-8 lead, then grabbed eight of the final 10 scores to end the game, 30-16.
The Pack put forth a much stronger effort in the second game, upping its hitting percentage to .162. In a see-saw match that saw six score ties and two lead changes, Virginia evened things up at 27-27 on a Raibon attack error, before taking the lead on the next play and ultimately winning on a Janay Yancey attack error, 30-27.
The Wolfpack held the early advantage in the third and final game, but the Cavaliers tied things up at 9-9 on a Sarah Kirkwood kill. Virginia then scored five more consecutive points to build a 14-9 advantage and take the lead for good. Lauren Dickson sent in a service ace to give UVa the victory, 30-17.
NC State will return to the courts next Wednesday, Nov. 1, against Duke in Durham, N.C. The Blue Devils are currently ranked No. 25 nationally in the latest rankings released by the America Volleyball Coaches Association. The 7 p.m. match will be held at Cameron Indoor Stadium on the Duke University campus.
